3. Know your peak flow

A peak flow meter is advisable to have especially when you have frequent attacks. It measures your peak expiratory flow rate (PEF). This number is important to know and keep track of. A sign of an impending asthma attack is when this number starts to drop. When this is the case you may need to start using your inhalers more or go see your doctor.

4. Use your prescribed inhalers

Inhalers are usually of 2 kinds. One to prevent and one to treat. When prescribed, remember to use the preventive inhaler even when you are well. This inhaler helps prevent attacks. 5. Don’t delay hospital visits when sick

Asthma attacks have the potential to become severe very quickly. Ensure you attend the hospital at the first signs of an attack that’s not improving with your usual inhaler regimen. Depending on where you are, you may need to select a good hospital beforehand as not all have access to the lifesaving equipment and skills needed in a severe attack.

6. Exercise

Exercise is good for your lungs. It helps keep it open and increase its capacity. It’s also been known to reduce the severity and frequency of attacks.

7. Eat healthily

Healthy Eating

A healthy diet free from allergens and full of fruit and vegetables is good for your whole well-being and prevention of attacks. Having a poor diet will lead to weight gain which impacts on your lung capacity.

  1. I have found that running has helped my breathing no end. I was diagnosed with asthma at about 7 (I’m 34 now) and have had a few fairly bad attacks throughout my life. During summer, when pollen counts are very high, I do feel my running is affected by my breathing but generally speaking, I have gone from ensuring I had a puff on my Salbutamol inhaler before every run and carrying it with me, to barely ever bothering with it. So, in my experience, in the short term, it can provide triggers for attacks but, long term, running and good aerobic fitness helps a huge amount.
